DP Art class annually offers an opportunity for art students to go on a field trip to an art exhibition. This year, 15 students from both Year 1 and Year 2 went on a trip with Mrs. Chough to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) located in Seoul, exploring three exhibitions: Korea Artist Prize 2026 (올해의 작가상 2026), Do Ho Suh (서도호), This is (Not) Conceptual Art (이것은 개념미술이 (아니)다).
The first exhibition we visited was Korea Artist Prize 2026, which was featuring four contemporary Korean artists: Lee Hai Min Sun (이해민선), Lee Jungwoo (이정우), Jeon Hyunsun (전현선), and Hong Jin-Hwon (홍진훤). Each artist worked in a different medium, which varied from painting to AI-generated video. The variety of mediums allowed each artist to present their own distinct style and approach to contemporary art. Seeing the four artists gave the opportunity to experience how differently artists can communicate their ideas through their chosen mediums.
After exploring the first exhibition, students took a break for lunch at bukchon within their own groups. Kalguksu was the lunch for my group.
Next was the Do Ho Suh (서도호) exhibition. Personally this exhibition was very interesting and inspiring to me as it brought a work span worth several decades altogether. The artworks ranged from small paintings and sculptures to large installations.
The last exhibition was This is (Not) Conceptual Art, which traced the history of conceptual art from the 1970s onward. It was organized into four sections, and many of the works relied on ideas and text rather than traditional images or objects. The most
For the DP Art students, the trip offered a rare chance to step outside the classroom and encounter art at full scale. Visiting all three exhibitions gave the chance to see a wide range of contemporary Korean art in person.
